STARTING POINT: HERB ALPERTEl Presidente
NOMINATED BY: SFC PRES

Herb Alpert also recorded Bean Bag, which is more commonly recognised in the UK as the theme to the TV game show, ‘It’s A Knockout’. The international version was ‘Jeux Sans Frontières’ a phrase repeated in the song Games Without Frontiers by Peter Gabriel, a literal translation of the phrase. Singing backing vocals on this track was Kate Bush, whose song “Dreamtime” (the b-side of her hit “The Dreaming”) featured the use of a didgeridoo, the favoured instrument of choice for 70s children’s entertainer, Rolf Harris. His song, “War Canoe” was the basis for a ‘large sum’ ‘out of court’ payment, from Adam Ant, when it was said to be ’almost musically identical’ to the latter’s hit “Prince Charming”. Adam’s earlier recording ‘Lady was recorded before some of his fellow Ants left the group to form Bow Wow Wow with Annabella Lwin. One of their biggest hits was “I Want Candy”, an old hit from the 60s, that was also covered by Mel C, who reportedly had a relationship with Robbie Williams before he recorded his hit, also about “Candy”. The following year, Williams released and album called ‘Swings Both Ways’ which featured a cover of the 60s Mama Cass single, “Dream A Little Dream” with Lily Allen, daughter of actor/comedian Keith Allen who had had a number one hit with the football song “Vindaloo” under the name Fat Les. His follow-up Christmas single was “Naughty Christmas” which reached number 21 in the charts and featured Lisa Moorish on backing vocals. Lisa had also sung backing vocals on Ash’s “Oh Yeah” before her infamous affair with Oasis front-man Liam Gallagher. Oasis performed the theme tune, “Half A World Away”, on TV’s ‘The Royle Family’ which starred Ricky Tomlinson, who had his own hit with a cover of Shane McGowen’s “Are You Looking At Me”. Shane was the driving force behind The Pogues, the band featured many, traditional sounding, Irish folk tunes like “Sally MacLennane” among their earliest recordings. Shane is probably best known for his perennial Christmas hit “Fairytale Of New York”, a seasonal duet with Kirsty MacColl. After her first hit “There’s A Guy Works Down The Chip Shop Swears He’s Elvis” in 1981, Kirsty had many single releases before her last “England 2 Columbia 0” which was released just before her unfortunate, accidental, death in 2000. One of her biggest hits was a cover of Billy Bragg’s “A New England”, which failed to chart for the songwriter, unlike his cover of “She’s Leaving Home” which went to number one as part of a double A-side release with Wet Wet Wet’s “With A Little Help From My Friends”. Both originally hits for the Beatles, George Martin produced much of their output, including the wonderful “And I Love Her”, as well as many recordings for many other artists. Cilla Black was just one of these, and her cover of the Gene Pitney hit “Something’s Gotten Hold Of My Heart” was also produced by the maestro. Cilla went on to host TV’s ‘Blind Date’ which was a British version of the American hit show ‘The Dating Game’, which featured “Spanish Flea” as the ‘Bachelor’s Theme’ part of the programme which was originally a hit for Herb Alpert!

25 Songs, 25 Days - Day Twenty-Five!!!

DAY TWENTY-FIVE - A SONG YOU COULD LISTEN TO ALL DAY WITHOUT GETTING TIRED OF

So this is it - after 25 days of digging deep in the old brain to find tracks for each of them, I end on my birthday with a song that I could listen to all day. Well, it has to be this from the Art Of Noise. Surely one of the only songs I never tire of listening to... and to prove the fact, here are several different versions - should keep me busy for a while!

25 Songs, 25 Days - Day Twenty-Four

DAY TWENTY-FOUR - A SONG THAT YOU HAVE DANCED TO WITH YOUR BEST FRIEND

Several times - what a stupid dance too!

Friday, 13 May 2016

25 Songs, 25 Days - Day Twenty-Three

DAY TWENTY-THREE - A SONG THAT YOU CANNOT STAND TO LISTEN TO

I love terrible songs, and I have a large sub-collection of some really awful pieces of music. I can normally find something in even the worst of recordings, even if it is only a laugh! But this damn thing went way past 'so bad it's funny' and come out the other side as 'so bad, it really is terrible'!

25 Songs, 25 Days - Day Twenty-Two

DAY TWENTY-TWO - A SONG THAT SOMEONE HAS SUNG TO YOU

My Grandmother, as she sat me on her knee at a very early age...

25 Songs, 25 Days - Day Twenty-one

DAY TWENTY-ONE - YOUR FAVOURITE SONG

This was a tricky one, but when I thought about it, there could only be one selection. Although I have loads of songs I love by particular artists, there are very few that I like when they are recorded by ANY artist. 'My Funny Valentine' was written by those classic songwriters Lorenz Hart and Richard Rogers for the 1937 show 'Babes In Arms', and was originally sung by Mitzi Green. I now have hundreds of versions of this song, and most seem to give a unique interpretations. The first time I heard it was on the b-side of  'Oliver's Army' by Elvis Costello, which still remains my favourite.

25 Songs, 25 Days - Day Twenty

DAY TWENTY - THE LAST SONG ALPHABETICALLY IN YOUR iPOD/TUNES

See yesterday's explanation...

Tuesday, 10 May 2016

25 Songs, 25 Days - Day Nineteen

DAY NINETEEN - THE FIRST SONG ALPHABETICALLY IN YOUR iPOD/TUNES

I don't have an iPod, and I don't believe in iTunes. As previously mentioned, I do have a USB stick that I play in the car, but that gets changed a lot. I have a few hundered tracks on my mobile, but that hardly gets played, so I shall take this to be the first track on my Hard Drive, where I keep most of my music these days. Ignoring numbers, symbols and punctuation marks. The first track of my current 166,762 tracks is A B C (note the spaces)....

Monday, 9 May 2016

25 Songs, 25 Days - Day Eighteen

DAY EIGHTEEN - A SONG THAT YOU LOVE BUT RARELY LISTEN TO

This was my favourite song of 1987, and although I often listen to Squeeze, this one always manages to get missed.

Sunday, 8 May 2016

25 Songs, 25 Days - Day Seventeen

DAY SEVENTEEN - A SONG THAT MAKES YOU WANT TO DANCE

Loads of songs make me want to dance. Unfortunately, the older I get, the less I can. However this one can still get the legs jiggling...

Saturday, 7 May 2016

25 Songs, 25 Days - Day Sixteen

DAY SIXTEEN - A SONG THAT HAS MADE YOU CRY

Tissues at the ready folks - one of the last songs performed by Johnny Cash - I challenge you not to...

Friday, 6 May 2016

25 Songs, 25 Days - Day Fifteen

DAY FIFTEEN - A SONG YOU LOVE SINGING ALONG TO

As my long-suffering wife and children will testify, I love singing along to loads of songs, especially in the car on long journeys. Picking out just one is really difficult, but I chose this one... All together now... "A little bit of me, and a whole lotta you...."!!

Thursday, 5 May 2016

25 Songs, 25 Days - Day Fourteen

DAY FOURTEEN - A SONG THAT REMINDS YOU OF YOUR GIRLFRIEND

As my girlfriend is my wife - this is the first song we ever danced together to, and consequently 'our song'...

..

Wednesday, 4 May 2016

25 Songs, 25 Days - Day Thirteen

DAY THIRTEEN - A SONG THAT REMINDS YOU OF A FORMER FRIEND

A friend of mine passed away very recently. She was happy, cheerful, and only had good words to say about everyone. This was one of her favourite songs...

Tuesday, 3 May 2016

25 Songs, 25 Days - Day Twelve

DAY TWELVE - THE LAST SONG YOU HEARD

I currently have a USB stick in my car with 640 tracks taken randomly from my collection. I have it on random play, so it's like having my own radio station, never knowing what's coming next, but knowing it'll be, at least, listenable. I'm pleased to say that the track playing as I parked my car tonight was this one...(a few minutes earlier, and this would have been quite embarrassing!).

Monday, 2 May 2016

25 Songs, 25 Days - Day Eleven

DAY ELEVEN - A SONG ON THE SOUNDTRACK OF YOUR FAVOURITE MOVIE

As my favourite movie is a silent one (Metropolis), I have chosen my second favourite movie 'Brazil'. The title theme is the song, and you can currently watch the whole movie on YouTube, which I suggest you do at some point soon. Your life is poorer without it!

Sunday, 1 May 2016

25 Songs, 25 Days - Day Ten

DAY TEN - A SONG BY YOUR FAVOURITE BAND

Picking my favourite band is easy. I first heard XTC in 1977, and I've got every song released by them, either as a band, or as one of the many solo projects or collaborations that the individual members have taken part in, right up to their DVD audio surround sound re-issues, currently being issued on a very irregular basis. Their music has led me through punk, pop, folk, rock, psychedelia, reggae, dance, and a whole load of other genres, and their lyrics have covered almost every conceivable subject from famous landmarks to songs about the penis (seek out 'Pink Thing' - pure genius!), from helicopters to ladybirds, from pyromania to atheism. So what one to pick for this list? I chose a simple love song...
